I recently purchased a new car from GWM Wangara as my old Triton was on her
last legs. I decided to trade her in and get a tray back ute as a replacement.
I chose the Cannon mainly on price as well as the level of tech, comfort and load
carrying capacity. Plus, they look pretty good to me.

I started the upgrades with a towbar, Red Arc tow pro elite, window tint and floor mats.
All supplied by the dealer.
When it came to buying the canopy there were a few good products to choose from. I
decided to go with the Paramount steel canopy 1500mm long. This fitted quite well onto
the tray with room to spare on the rear for a couple of jerry can holders and a spare wheel
carrier.

I also fitted the under-tray toolboxes from Paramount. These come in handy for storing
all the recovery gear and tools.

A big thankyou to my best mate Jacob for helping me with the installation of the canopy
and toolboxes. It was a 2-man job.

Once the floor was in it was time to think about the positioning of everything that I was
going to put in. I decided due to price and availability that the products would mainly be
from 4WD Supacentre. The below picture is of the wiring I did as a temporary fix for the
Aussie day long weekend trip. It also shows the 45 litre water tank against the front wall.

The proper wiring is a lot tidier. The final electrics include a 160w solar panel, 25amp
DC/DC charger, 200a/hr lithium battery, 1500w inverter, battery monitor, a couple of
Anderson plugs and a dual cig socket.

The other side of the canopy consisted of an 85lt upright fridge, pantry, oven a set of
drawers and the 45lt water tank. I also put the double thumper air compressor against the
back wall. This is powered from an Anderson plug on the tow bar.

Now that all the heavy work had been done it was time for the external upgrades.
I went for the Falken Wildpeak AT’s due mainly to the price and that the buy 3 get one
free promotion was a bonus. I had previously bought a spare set of alloy rims so I can
have 2 spare tyres on alloys. I chose LT275-65 R18 tyres as they were in stock and look
great on the car. I also had the suspension upgraded with Tough Dog shocks and springs.
Due to the amount of crap, I will be carrying I chose 500kg constant load springs in the
back.
The Cannon also comes with rear disc brakes as standard.

I also had fitted a TJM Snorkel, Bull bar from Sports range and a Kings winch. Inside I
also had an Oricom cb radio. The above picture shows us ready for the next adventure.

Other accessories on the car include. 2 x Kings awnings, 2 x rear spotlights, front light
bar, roof rack with recovery tracks strapped to it and underbody protection.

So far I have done 7450 kilometres and the ride and comfort of this vehicle is fantastic. I
was at first sceptical of the 2lt turbo diesel engine. It is mated to an 8 speed ZF gearbox
and so far I have not been disappointed. Off road she has proven herself (Now that I
know what to do)

To wrap it up. Don’t discount these Chinese built vehicles. The fit and finish are superb
and for the bottom trim level you can’t go wrong. It has everything except the kitchen
sink.
The seats are comfortable, the infotainment system is easy to use and the overall level of
equipment is outstanding.
