On a windy Saturday morning, 4 keen All Tracks fishers went to a Secret Spot, found by Alex and Nick a few months earlier. We met up at Drovers, with Alex and Keith bringing their new camper trailers to test on the beach.

We drove a bit past the busy starting area and aired down. Nick had checked the weather and had advised the wind was dropping off in the afternoon and evening, so it could be great fishing conditions.

Alex let Nick go in front to lead the way, but the entry hill of the beach seemed a bit steep, attempting to turn around and promptly got bogged, much to the amusement of the crowd. They were pretty impressed by his trailer though. Alex was successfully rescued by Shane using a snatch strap and we continued, but a small misturn and the Trailer boys had to navigate down a pretty steep hill. After successfully navigating the hill the rest of the way was easy.

Right behind the dunes, near our fishing spot, everyone found a great place to park and set up their overnight facilities. Alex led the way setting up his new Patriot trailer, and was kicking back watching the rest of us get ready.

Everyone rigged up with Nick showing Keith the “1 knot” that could be used for every rig scenario and moved the gear to the beach and set up for the night.

We all sat around for about an hour waiting for the sun to start setting, drank a few beers then headed down to the beach. After about 1/2 hr, I got to admit, we were getting worried that the fish were not biting, even though the wind had died down to a pleasant breeze. Keith was the first to catch a fish, his first in 20 years and it was a great sized tailor

Nick got the second one, a really good Mulloway, over 60 cms.

Shane came in 3rd with probably the biggest Mullaway of the night. You should have brought a bigger bucket.

After several hours, a very patient Alex got himself a superb Mullaway.

Then it was on, with everyone catching more fish before finally calling it a night after about 5 hrs fishing

Finally, we were all in bed after midnight. We left early in the morning, with one bogging on the way back. We found a different route and got to the car park, aired up, and drove home. That night, the fish were on the barbecue, with the leftovers made into fish cakes.

Story by Nick.
